Quick start in 3 steps

  1. Hide your bombs. You and your opponent each secretly place a handful of bombs (the exact number depends on the format — details below). Neither of you sees where the other hid theirs.
  2. Take turns tapping. Tap a cell. Safe? Keep going next turn. Someone's bomb? Boom — you lose a heart.
  3. Last one standing wins. You have 3 hearts. Lose them all and you're out. Outlast everyone and the round is yours.

That's genuinely the whole game. The fun is in the mind games — read on for the details that separate winners from craters.

Hearts & elimination

Every player starts with 3 hearts. Hitting a bomb that isn't yours costs 1 heart and immediately ends your turn. Run out of hearts and you're eliminated — since it's just the two of you, that means your opponent is the last one standing and the round ends right there.

Your own bombs are safe — and that's a strategy

Tapping a cell where you hid a bomb never hurts you. Instead, it publicly defuses that bomb. Why would you ever do that? Because it buys you a guaranteed safe turn while everyone else gambles, and it feeds opponents false information — they now "know" that area was yours and may assume the rest of your bombs are far away. Sacrificing a bomb to survive a scary late-game board is a completely legit move.

Stacked bombs

Two players can secretly pick the same cell. If someone taps a stacked cell, both bombs explode together — but the tapper still only loses one heart. Bombs are consumed when they blow, so a double explosion clears two threats from the board at once.

Turn timer & slow players

You get 15 seconds per turn. It keeps rounds snappy and stops anyone from stalling while they overthink a cell. Let the clock run out and you collect a strike — repeat offenders get penalized, so commit to a cell and tap.

Board sizes: three formats to pick from

Bomb density actually shifts by format: Duel's 3×3 is a third mined, Quick's 4×4 is half, Classic's 5×5 is 40%. Full breakdown on the board sizes page.

Duel mode (the default)

Bomb It defaults to Duel — the viral 1v1 format. Instead of one shared board, you each get your own 3x3 grid, and you secretly hide 3 bombs on your opponent's board. On your turn you tap their board hunting the traps, and you lose a heart when they find one of yours. It plays like Battleship with a fuse.

Prefer a shared board instead? The host can switch the room to Quick (shared 4x4, 4 bombs each) or Classic (shared 5x5, 5 bombs each) in the lobby. There's a full walkthrough on the Duel mode page.

What if the whole board gets revealed?

If every cell ends up tapped or defused before anyone claims victory, the round ends and the player with the most hearts wins. Tied on hearts? That's a "Survivors' split" — the tied players share the win.

Rematch & scoreboard

When a round ends, one tap starts an instant rematch with the same group. A session scoreboard tracks wins across rounds, so a best-of-five grudge match settles itself automatically.

Spectators & reactions

A room holds 2 players, but unlimited spectators can watch live from the same room code or link. Spectators can fire off reactions while players sweat — perfect for group calls, classrooms, and office standoffs.
