Bomb It Duel Mode: the 1v1 Bomb-Hunt Guide

Two boards, three bombs each, one survivor. The head-to-head format that started the whole trend.

PLAY A DUEL — IT'S FREE

When two people join a Bomb It room, they play Duel by default — the fast, brutal 1v1 version of the bomb-hunt. It is the closest thing to the real-life bomb chip challenge you have seen in short-video feeds: you hide traps on your rival's grid, they hide traps on yours, and you take turns finding out who guessed better. This page covers exactly how Duel works and the tactics that only apply to the 1v1 board.

How Duel is different from the shared board

In Bomb It's other two formats — Quick and Classic — everyone hides bombs on one shared board and tapping your own bomb is safe. Duel flips that:

That single change — separate boards you attack instead of one board you share — is what makes Duel feel like a real face-off instead of a group gamble.

The rules, start to finish

  1. Set up. Two players in a room, mode set to Duel (the host can switch to Quick or Classic, but Duel is the default). Each player has 3 hearts.
  2. Place your bombs. You get a placement timer to hide 3 bombs anywhere on the 3×3 board that belongs to your opponent. Tap to place, tap again to remove, or hit Shuffle to scatter them randomly.
  3. Take turns hunting. On your turn you tap one un-revealed cell on your opponent's board. A safe cell is marked and play passes over. A bomb explodes — but here is the twist that keeps Duel tense.
  4. Hearts. You lose a heart when your opponent finds one of the bombs you were supposed to avoid — the traps live on the board you are defending. Lose all 3 hearts and you are out.
  5. Winning. Last player standing wins the round. An instant rematch and a running scoreboard turn a single duel into a best-of series without any setup between games.

Exact bomb counts and timers can evolve as we tune the game, but the shape is always: hide a few, hunt a few, protect your hearts.

Duel-only strategy

A 3×3 board is tiny — so placement is everything

With only nine cells and three bombs, a third of the board is armed. There is nowhere truly safe to hide, so stop thinking "where is safe" and start thinking "where will they tap last." Most players open on the center or a corner out of habit; placing against that habit buys you an early hit.

Don't cluster

Three bombs in a row or corner is a gift: one lucky read and your opponent clears the neighborhood. Spread your traps so that finding one tells them as little as possible about the other two.

Vary every rematch

Duel's instant rematch means you are playing the person, not just the board. If your last two setups leaned left, a sharp opponent leans left with their taps. Rotate your pattern each round, and watch whether they "correct" predictably after getting burned — an over-correction is still a pattern you can exploit.

Manage your hearts like a clock

With 3 hearts you can afford to probe aggressively early and force information. Down to your last heart, slow down: tap only cells you can reason about, and remember that a duel is won by outlasting, not by rushing. Sometimes the winning move is the patient one.

Where to play it

Duel shines on a one-on-one video call, across the table on two phones, or any time it's just the two of you and you want the fastest, most personal format Bomb It has. New to Bomb It entirely? Read the how-to-play guide for the full ruleset, or the strategy guide for the deeper mind games.
